Negotiating with Emotional Intelligence
Negotiation entails mutual problem solving and decision-making and is a skill that influences all areas of life. The process involves managing differing opinions, values and interests. These elements create strong emotional responses. Effective negotiators do not consume valuable energy buying into nor suppressing emotions. Instead, they allow the emotions to steer the conversation toward productive, values-driven outcomes.
Navigating difficult conversations when there is a need to maintain positive, high quality relationships requires emotional intelligence. Self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and a spirit of learning are important ingredients for managing the negotiation process. Genuine curiosity evokes positive energy and creates space for innovative solutions. Using a principle-based negotiation process offsets conflicts and ensures a more productive, satisfying outcome for both parties.
The purpose of negotiating with emotional intelligence is to reach agreements without creating future difficulties in communication and to strengthen important relationships. To better understand these competencies and how to apply them in high stakes negotiations, read my chapter in Success Strategies From Women In STEM: A Portable Mentor, 2nd edition.
